Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of former United States President Barrack Obama, is going to pursue a career as director in Hollywood.

She has dropped her last name to distance herself from her father, officially going by Malia Ann for her newest film project, “The Heart.”

The pen name was revealed in a “Meet the Artist” spotlight video for the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on Wednesday, introducing her as a filmmaker named Malia Ann.

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Maliha Obama’s directional “The Heart” is about an unexpected request and a terrible loss that brings attention to the intense and complex relationship between a mother and her son.

However, Malia Obama is not the first celebrity child to take a stage name for working in Hollywood, aiming to distance themselves from their families. Before this, noted actor Nicolas Cage changed his last name from ‘Coppola’ and popular actress Angelina Jolie dropped her surname ‘Voight’ during their early film careers.
