Climate change poses threat to livelihood in Rajshahi Barind

Adverse impact of climate change caused by global warming has been posing a serious threat to the overall living and livelihood condition in the region, particularly in its vast Barind tract.

Climate change has been acknowledged as the depletion of natural resources and as a major threat to the humanity in the region and the policy planners and others concerned to take immediate effective measures to address the adverse impacts
 
A group of social watchdogs and development activists came up with the observation while addressing a Climate March titled "Rajshahi Drought Voices to COP-28" at Borokuthi open stage in the city today.

Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) and Barendra Youth Forum (BYF) jointly organised the programme.

Chairman of Save the Life and Nature Society Mijanur Rahman, business leader Sekendar Ali, BARCIK Regional Coordinator Shahidul Islam, journalist Waliur Rahman and BUF publicity secretary Atikur Rahman addressed the meeting.
 
Mijanur Rahman mentioned that the ongoing climate change at alarming rates has severely affected winter vegetable farming and its diversity creating a real threat to food production. The developed countries should fulfill their commitment towards climate funding and ensure transparency in use of this fund.

In his remarks, Shahidul Islam said legitimate rights of the farmers and others concerned should be protected rightly for the sake of encouraging them towards boosting agricultural productions to meet up its gradually mounting demands.
 
Referring to the enormous contribution of farmers to the country's agricultural development he said the farmers deserve the rights of getting all requisite privileges. There is no alternative to protect their interests as a whole.
 
He pointed out that the existing agricultural system has started facing a serious threat because of climate change that also leads to various natural disasters.
 
Islam said this is the time to change the system, not climate besides showing red-cards to the big carbon emitters.
