Prime accused Badiul Alam Majumdar's brother-in-law was arrested in the Bernicat convoy attack

On Wednesday, in a case related to the attack on the convoy of former US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat in 2018, police in the capital's Mohammadpur area detained the prime accused.

Mohammad Ishtiaq Mahmud, Shusashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder's brother-in-law, is the person who has been arrested.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Mohammadpur Police Station, Md. Mahfuzul Haque Bhuiya, verified the information overnight.  

According to UNB, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zaki Al-Farabi earlier on Wednesday accepted the supplemental chargesheet that the Detective Branch of DMP had filed against nine individuals, including a leader of the Chhatra League, in relation to the 2018 attack on the Bernicat convoy at Mohammadpur in the capital.

Ishtiaq Mahmud, the President of the Chhatra League's Mohammadpur Thana unit, Naimul Hasan, also known as Russell, Firoz Mahmud, Mir Amjad Hossain, Saju Islam, Rajibul Islam, Shahidul Alam Khan, Siam, and Oli Ahmed are the defendants in this case.

Ishtiaq appeared as a fugitive in the supplemental chargesheet.

The magistrate accepted the chargesheet and then issued an arrest warrant for Ishtiaq.

In this regard, a supplemental chargesheet was submitted by The Detective Branch (DB) on September 19.

On August 10, 2018, Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar reported the attack to the Mohammadpur Police Station.

Inspector Md Abdur Rouf, the case's investigating officer, filed a chargesheet with the court on January 18, 2021, accusing nine persons.

The trial started on March 28 of the prior year, and the nine accused were formally charged on March 1, 2022.

Six witnesses in the case gave testimony on December 4.

Ishtiaq's name was brought up by witnesses Mahbubul Alam Majumder, Khushi Begum, and Badiul Alam Majumdar during their statements.

Later, on December 27, the court sent the case to the CMM Court in Dhaka so that they could take the appropriate actions to conduct additional investigation after lifting it from the deposition stage.

A second inquiry into the matter was mandated by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury's court on January 1.
