This morning (September 25, 2023), the air quality in Dhaka was rated as 'moderate'.
At 9:15 a.m., with an air quality index (AQI) score of 94, Dhaka ranked ninth on the list of cities with the poorest air quality.
Karachi, Pakistan, Delhi, India, and Jakarta, Indonesia held the top three positions on the list, with AQI scores of 165, 161, and 146, respectively.
An AQI between 50 and 100 indicates'moderate' air quality. However, a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution may face moderate health risks.
In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five pollutants: Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and Ozone.
Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution problems. Typically, its air quality declines during the winter and improves during the monsoon.
Globally, air pollution consistently ranks among the leading causes of death and disability.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), global air pollution kills approximately seven million people annually.
