Police presses charges against 3 people over death of DU student

Police have pressed charges against three people in a case filed over the death of a Dhaka University student, Elma Chowdhury Meghla, in December last year.

The accused are victim's husband Iftekhar Abedin and his parents -- Mohammad Amin, a retired army person, and Shirin Amin.

Talking to the reports at the court premises today, victim's father Saiful Islam Chowdhury said his daughter was tortured to death but police submitted probe report under Section 306 of Penal Code that means the accused abetted her to "commit suicide". So, he will file no-confidence petition on the next scheduled date.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur fixed August 3 for the next hearing of the case.

Among the accused, Iftekhar was arrested but he was granted bail from Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court till submission of the police report.

As police submitted probe report, his bail term expired. So, he was sent to jail today after his surrender, seeking bail in the case.

While his parents were also granted bail from different courts on different courts.

Md Salauddin Mollah, a sub-inspector of Banani Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, yesterday (June 19, 2022) submitted the charge sheet against the three to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court.

In the charge sheet, the IO said the charges brought against them of abetting the victim to "commit suicide" were primarily proved and they should be brought under trial for their alleged involvement with committing such offences, the IO added.

Elma, a DU final year student of the department of dance, was allegedly tortured to death at her in-laws' residence in Dhaka's Banani on December 14 last year.

Following her death, her father filed a case against Iftekhar and his parents with Banani Police Station. The Daily Star
