In a corruption case, a Dhaka court has sentenced BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to nine years in prison and his wife Zubaida Rahman to three years.

Wednesday afternoon, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Asaduzzaman announced the verdict.

In the event that Tarique does not pay the fine, he will serve an additional three months in jail.

The judge fined Zubaida Tk 45,000,000. If she fails to pay the fine, she will serve an additional month in jail.

43 out of 56 total witnesses testified in the case.

The court framed charges against the two fugitives on April 13, 2013, while denying their request to appoint attorneys to defend them in absentia.

On September 26, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, and his mother-in-law Iqbal-Mand Banu for illegally amassing Taka 4.81 crore and concealing information about the asset.

In 2008, the anti-corruption agency filed the charge sheet. In 2008, Zubaida filed a petition with the High Court requesting the dismissal of the case's proceedings. In the same year, the High Court stayed the case's proceedings, which was later upheld by the Appellate Division.

On April 12, 2017, after a final hearing on the matter, the High Court dismissed Zubaida's appeal. In addition, she was required to appear before the relevant trial court within eight weeks. Later, Zubaida filed an appeal petition against the High Court's decision.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court dismissed Zubaida's petition for leave to appeal and upheld the High Court's decision on April 13, 2022.

The lower court issued arrest warrants for the couple on November 1, 2022, after accepting the charges brought against them. The court issued a summons for the couple to appear in court on February 6, 2023.
