Attempted rape: Pori Moni’s case to be adjudicated via camera trial

A camera trial will be used to conduct the trial in the case brought by actress Pori Moni against businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmood and Tuhin Siddique Omi for attempted rape and murder.

 

Nilanjana Rifat, the attorney for Pori Moni, confirmed it on Monday.

In a typical public trial, the entire legal proceeding takes place in an open court or tribunal that anyone may enter.

The phrase "camera trial" refers to a particular case being investigated or tried at any point at the judge's discretion in a private chamber or closed-door room. Nobody else is allowed to go there or stay there without the court's approval.

Pori Moni appeared and gave a testimony in front of Judge Shahina Haque Siddiqui on Monday at the Dhaka Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-9.

Pori Moni informed the court at one point during her testimony that she did not want to discuss certain details of the incident.

She was then asked if she wanted to continue with a camera trial, and her attorney then requested that it happen.

The case will be tried on September 13; the court approved the application and set the date for the camera trial.

Actor Pori Moni accused businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmood and his friend Tuhin Siddique Omi of attempted rape and murder on June 14, 2021, with the assistance of four unidentified accomplices.

On September 6 of that year, the investigation officer, Inspector Kamal Hossain of the Savar police station, presented a chargesheet to the court against three people, including Nasir.

Judge Md Hemayet Uddin of the Dhaka Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-9 accepted the chargesheet in December.

The formation of charges against the accused and the start of the trial were both ordered by the court on May 18 of this year.
