After a 20-day pause due to a coal shortage, the Payra Power Plant started up again on Sunday morning.

Shah Abdul Hasib, the power plant's superintending engineer, confirmed the news by stating that a unit capable of producing 660 MW began operations this morning.

The 1320 MW Payra coal-fired power plant is owned and operated by the BCPCL, a joint venture between China National Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CMC) and Bangladesh's state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Limited.

18 days after the thermal power plant's electricity production was halted due to a lack of coal, a ship carrying 41,327 metric tonnes of coal arrived at Payra Port yesterday.

According to plant officials, four more ships carrying coal will arrive at Payra in the first week of July.

Due to a lack of coal, the largest thermal power plant in the nation, Payra, completely shut down on June 5.

Production of a unit of the power plant was suspended on May 25 as a result of the companies involved ceasing to supply coal due to the failure to pay the outstanding bills, totaling $390 million, which was brought on by a lack of dollars.

There were weeks of nationwide load-shedding during the hottest summer on record as a result of another unit's production ceasing on June 5 due to a shortage of coal.
