YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.O), announced on Friday that it would no longer be removing material that might have spread untrue information about the 2020 and earlier U.S. presidential elections.

The most recent updates are a part of YouTube's new, immediately effective anti-misinformation campaign.

"In the current environment, we find that while removing this content does curb some misinformation, it could also have the unintended effect of curtailing political speech," said YouTube in a blog post.
The platform added that all user content, including elections, would continue to be subject to the rest of its policies against hate speech, harassment, and incitement to violence.

Concerns have been raised about how social media platforms enforce their rules against election-related misinformation in light of the proliferation of false information.

There has been an increase in election-related misinformation on Twitter and Facebook, both of which are operated by Meta Platforms Inc. (META.O).
