The Syrian defense ministry claimed that Damascus was the target of a "Israeli aggression" overnight on Sunday, but there were no reported casualties.

The Israeli enemy launched an aerial attack at around 11:45 p.m. (2045 GMT), the ministry reported.

According to the ministry, the missiles were aimed at "certain positions near Damascus," but anti-aircraft defenses intervened and shot down a number of them.
Just before midnight local time (2100 GMT), an AFP reporter heard explosions in the Syrian capital.

The attacks on Damascus were the first since late March.

Seven people died in the final Israeli airstrikes against Syria on May 2.

Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against the Syrian regime, Iranian, and Lebanese Hezbollah forces—allies of Damascus and archenemies of Israel—since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011.

Israel says it wants to stop Iran from establishing a foothold on its doorstep but rarely makes specific comments about the strikes.
