The United States has reaffirmed its support for Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's commitment and efforts to organize free and fair elections.
"I believe we can say that Prime Minister Hasina has pledged support for free and fair elections. We share her support for free and fair elections," US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated during a routine press briefing in Washington, DC on May 24.
Miller made these comments in response to a questioner who wanted to know if the United States is advocating for a neutral caretaker government in order to hold free and fair elections.
"We and the policy we announced today are designed to support these efforts, as well as the efforts of the Bangladeshi people to hold elections in which they can choose their leaders," the spokesperson added.
"Finally, I would like to say that as friends, we have voiced our concerns when we observe actions in Bangladesh that undermine democracy and human rights."
The US State Department Spokesperson stated that the announced policy is intended to support the Prime Minister's and the Bangladeshi people's efforts to hold elections in which the Bangladeshi people can choose their leaders.
