Jofra Archer, an England fast bowler, was disqualified from the Ashes series against Australia on Tuesday, but Jonny Bairstow, who is now healthy again, was reinstated to the Test squad for the lone match against Ireland next month.

After suffering elbow and back injuries that required 17 months of recovery, Archer was declared out "for the rest of the summer" and only made his return to international cricket in January.

Before his Indian Premier League (IPL) stint was over last week due to a nagging injury, the 28-year-old played five games for Mumbai Indians.

"It has been a frustrating and upsetting period for Jofra Archer," England men's cricket managing director Rob Key said in a statement.

"Up until a recurrence of the elbow injury that previously kept him out for a long time, he was making good progress. Regardless of the format, I have no doubt that Jofra will be back to his best and help England win games. Ideally, sooner as opposed to later.

After missing the T20 World Cup in Australia due to a freak golf injury in September, Bairstow has rejoined the team.

In order to make room for Bairstow for the four-day match against Ireland at Lord's beginning on June 1, wicketkeeper Ben Foakes was dropped.

Making the decision to leave Ben Foakes out of the team was extremely difficult, Key said.

"Jonny Bairstow is one of the best players in the world whose performances last summer epitomized what we are about," said the Englishman, "and he has been excellent for England in the last year."

Chris Woakes of Warwickshire, a seamer, rejoins the Test team for the first time since March 2022, and Mark Wood, a fast bowler for Durham, is also back after missing the tour of New Zealand.

Ben Stokes, the captain, recently suffered a left knee injury, and seamer James Anderson, a groin injury; however, both were named to the squad.

On June 16, the Ashes series against Australia gets underway at Edgbaston.

James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood make up the England team, which is led by Ben Stokes.
