Daren Sammy, the only man to lead his team to two T20 World Cup titles, was named the new head coach of the West Indies' white ball teams on Friday, according to the national federation.

The 39-year-old from St Lucia led the West Indies to a T20 World Cup final victory over Sri Lanka in 2012, and again in 2016 when they defeated England in a thrilling decider.

Within months of the second victory, Sammy, who had led the West Indies in all three formats of the game, was relieved of the captaincy, but went on to play franchise white ball cricket around the world.

Sammy has coached teams in the Pakistan Super League and the Caribbean Premier League since retiring as a player.

His first assignment will be a three-match One-Day International series against the UAE in Sharjah next month, ahead of the World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe.

West Indies did not qualify automatically and will now compete in the 10-team tournament for one of the two remaining spots in the main event, which will be held in India later this year.

"It will be a challenge, but one that I'm ready for and excited about," Sammy said.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity, especially given the players we have and the impact I believe I can have in the locker room."

"I believe I will bring the same approach as a player - passion, a desire for success, and an unwavering love for West Indian cricket."

Cricket West Indies, which decided in March to hire separate coaches for the limited overs and Test teams, also named former Jamaica wicketkeeper/batsman Andre Coley as the Test side's new head coach.

Coley, 48, was the team's interim head coach during its tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa earlier this year.

"They are well equipped for their roles, and we are confident they will bring different perspectives, skills, and real passion to the West Indies dressing room," said Johnny Grave, CWI CEO.

"The addition of separate coaches marks the beginning of a new approach for the West Indies men's teams."

"We know it will enable greater focus on player communication, team planning, and preparation to the benefit of our players and West Indies cricket."
