With his goal in Saturday's crucial 2-0 victory over Wolves, Anthony Martial helped Manchester United get back on track for a top-four finish.

Martial scored at Old Trafford in the first half after going eight games without doing so.

Alejandro Garnacho's injury-time goal gave United its first victory in three games.

Erik ten Hag's team restored order at Old Trafford after consecutive losses at Brighton and West Ham threatened to end their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Liverpool, who are currently in fifth place and face struggling Leicester on Monday, are now four points behind fourth-placed United, who are trailing Newcastle on goal differential.

United will still have three games left after that match, while Liverpool will only have two, putting Ten Hag's team in charge of their top four fate.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a former manager, returned to Old Trafford for the first time following his dismissal in November 2021.

Even Solskjaer's most ardent supporter had to admit that the impressive advancement made under Ten Hag this season underlined the shortcomings of his own troubled reign. Nevertheless, the Norwegian was all smiles as he posed for photos with fans prior to kickoff.

Due to Marcus Rashford's leg injury, Ten Hag made three changes, benching Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst in favor of Martial, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane.

United had only scored six goals in their previous nine games, giving Liverpool fresh hope following their six-game winning streak.

After Pedro Neto pulled the ball back to the defender inside the United area, Craig Dawson narrowly missed with a shot, giving Wolves a chance to take the unexpected lead.

However, as United's pressure grew, Bruno Fernandes' free-kick forced Wolves' rookie goalkeeper Daniel Bentley to make a save.

United continued to have opportunities, but Christian Eriksen's long-range shot went just wide, and Antony's six-yard header went wastefully over.

In the 32nd minute, Martial finally delivered, scoring just his second league goal of 2023.

The incisive raid by Antony was started by Fernandes' pass, and when Bentley erratically stepped off his line, the Brazilian selflessly cut back to Martial, who finished with ease.

Prior to halftime, Martial had a chance to double United's lead, but after receiving a pass from Antony, he shot directly at Bentley.

Max Kilman headed a corner down to Hwang Hee-chan for Wolves, but the substitute missed the target from a tight angle.

Bentley made another excellent save to stop Sancho's attempt after Fernandes was unable to beat him from close range.

Weghorst, who has yet to score for United in the Premier League, headed the ball over from six yards away.

Garnacho finished confidently after sprinting onto Fernandes' pass with a few seconds left.
