Draft of Representation of People (amendment) Act-2023 approved

The cabinet yesterday approved in principle the draft of Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 2023.

The approval came at the regular cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

"The proposed amendments will be finalized in next cabinet meeting," Secretary, Coordination and Reform Wing, Cabinet Division Md Mahmudul Hossain Khan told a press briefing at the Secretariat here after the meeting.

Alongside district based returning officer, constituency-based returning officer has been incorporated in the proposed amendment of the act, he added.

If the amendment proposal gets approval, the Election Commission can appoint a returning officer in each constituency, Mahmudul said adding one returning officer can be appointed for all constituencies under a district in the existing law.  

The secretary said the cabinet also approved the draft of the Bank Company (amendment) Act, 2023. In the proposed amendments, maximum three members of a family can be member of the board of director, he said, adding the existing law allows four members of a family in the board of director, he added.

Besides, tougher laws has been incorporated in the proposed amendments in case of receiving loans, Mahmudul added.

He said at the meeting, draft of the Land Development Tax Act-2023 has been approved.
