Hugo Lloris has been replaced as France's captain by Kylian Mbappe, a source close to the team told AFP on Monday. Hugo Lloris retired last year.

Mbappe, a 24-year-old forward for Paris Saint-Germain, agreed to the proposal after earlier-in-the-day discussions with Didier Deschamps.

After losing the World Cup final a month earlier, Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris decided to end his international career.

The skipper for more than a decade was Lloris, 36.

After Manchester United center-back Raphael Varane retired after the team's loss to Argentina in December, Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann was named vice-captain.

The 66-time international player, Mbappe, who assisted Les Bleus in winning the 2018 World Cup, had been strongly linked to the position for weeks. He scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final defeat.

Following Brazil's Marquinhos as vice captain at PSG, the former Monaco attacker captained the team without the defender during Sunday's defeat to Rennes.

The qualifier for Euro 2024 against the Netherlands will be his first match as captain on Friday at the Stade de France.
