Presidential election by February 23

The presidential election will be held between January 23 and February 23, Election Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam said today.

"The election process has already begun. We will contact the Parliament Secretariat and fix the date of a meeting between the chief election commissioner and the Speaker," he said after a meeting at the Election Commission.

The commission has finalised a proposal of amendment of some clauses regarding the election law for reserved seats for women in the Jatiya Sangsad.

An amendment to the constitution has increased the number of women seats to 50 from 45. But the number of seats in the law is still 45.

So, it has been proposed to amend the law and increase the number of seats to 50.

On the other hand, the deposit for candidates for the women's seats was proposed to be raised to Tk 20,000 from Tk 10,000, he said.
