Members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire on two Bangladeshi cattle sellers early today on the Mahishtuli border near Lalmonirhat (November 9, 2022).

According to Commander Shariful Islam Sharif of the Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion Lohakuchi BOP Camp, the deceased were Wazkaorni Mia (36) and Aynal Haque (35).

He said that the incident took place at Mahishtuli border area around 4:30 am today between the international border pillars No. 921 and 922.

"Around 10-12 cattle traders, including the two deceased, were smuggling cows from India when the patrolling BSF members of Baburhat camp under Sitai Police Station in Cooch Behar district of India's West Bengal opened fire at them," said the BGB commander.

Wazkaorni and Aynal got shot and died. The others brought the bodies back to Bangladesh region.

A letter has been sent to the BSF protesting the killings, the BGB official added.

Chairman of Bhelabari Union Parishad Mohammad Ali said that despite awareness campaigns in the border areas, some people go to India to smuggle cows.

"The bodies of the victims are with the family members and the police have been informed," he said.
