Awami League nominates former BCL president Ripon for Gaibandha-5 by-polls

Awami League has nominated former Bangladesh Chhatra League president Mahmud Hasan Ripon for Gaibandha-5 constituency by-polls.

The decision was taken during a joint meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Nomination Board and Awami League Local Government Representative Nomination Board   at  Ganabhaban with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

 

The parliamentary seat fell vacant at the death of Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah, who passed away in New York on July 23 while undergoing treatment there. 

 

The Election Commission set October 12 for the by-polls of the constituency.

Ripon, a member of the Awami League relief and social welfare affairs sub-committee, became the president of BCL in 2006. 

Emerging from the meeting, AL presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak told reporters that the parliamentary board nominated BCL former president Mahmudul Hasan Ripon to contest the Gaibandha-5 constituency by-polls.

Fazle Rabbi’s daughter Farzana Rabbi, also Fulchari Awami League unit general secretary sought the nomination for the by-polls, among others.  

The joint meeting also nominated candidates for elections in 61 Zila Parishads.
