Padma Bridge authority takes over project from contractors

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge authority has taken over the project from contractor China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd.

Padma Bridge Project Director Shafiqul Islam received the handover letter from the contractor on Wednesday, Padma Bridge Executive Engineer (Main Bridge) Dewan Abdul Quader confirmed the matter to the media.

He said: “The contractors completed their work and handed over the bridge to us. However, there will be minor maintenance works. For the next one year, the contractors will be on a defect liability period."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Padma Bridge, a symbol of Bangladesh's economic development, on Saturday morning. The much-anticipated megastructure will be opened to traffic the next morning on Sunday.

According to the notification, 13 types of vehicles will be able to move on the bridge.

However, local transportations like three wheelers and CNG-run autorickshaws will not be able to operate. People will not be able to travel on foot as well.
