Dhaka Metropolitan Police has started a drive to evict battery-run rickshaws from the streets of Dhaka city.

Battery-driven rishaws were being removed from several roads in the capital including Dhandmondi-32, Panthapath, Russel Square, ECB Chattar, and Mirpur since this morning (12 September).

When asked about the matter, DMP's Ramna Traffic Division Sergeant Mohamamd Farhad said, "Despite a ban on main roads, battery-run autorickshaws were plying the city streets, which caused huge traffic congestion on the roads for the last couple of days."

"We're first requesting them not to ply on main roads. If they don't comply with our requests, we will seize the vehicles," Farhad added.

However, passersby and city dwellers welcomed the decisions taken by the traffic department of DMP.

Tahmina Trisha, a Dhanmondi resident, said that the main roads should be free of battery-driven rickshaws.

"We thank police that finally they came to the scene," she added.
