Protesting police officers have announced the withdrawal of their strike.

Inspector Zahidul Islam and Constable Shoaib Hasan, representatives of the strikes, made the announcement following a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday, according to media reports.

Police had been assured that most of the demands they had placed before the government would be met, they said, adding that they hoped everyone would return to their duties.

The Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees Association declared the strike on August 6, following clashes across the country between police and students during protests.

The meeting at the home ministry was chaired by Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, the home affairs advisor, and attended by the inspector general of police (IGP), the director general of RAB and other officials.

Recently, several police officers were killed and injured during the student protests.

In addition to seeking justice for those responsible for the attacks on police establishments, the protesting officers had also demanded one-time financial compensation for the families of the deceased officers, transparency in police recruitment, especially for sub-inspectors and sergeants, and the assurance of 100% transparency in constable recruitment under police headquarters.
