79th Venice International Film Festival begins on August 31

The 79th Venice International Film Festival will begin on August 31. In the meantime, the 23 films, which the festival will be showcasing this year, has already been announced.

The movies, competing for this year's Golden Lion at the festival, ranging from biopics to thrillers. Let us take a look at the 6 most-anticipated movies that will be screened at the grand event this year.

Blonde

Netflix's "Blonde", starring Ana de Armas as Hollywood's greatest and most enduring icon Marilyn Monroe, will be screened at the festival this year.

Based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, the movie portrays the devastating life of Monroe during her childhood and later, her personal life.

The production is written and directed by Andrew Dominick, who's also the genius behind other much-appreciated biopics, including "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."  

Bones and All

Director Luca Guadagnino will be bringing his critically acclaimed project "Call Me by Your Name". The coming-of-age film stars Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell.

The movie is adapted from Camille DeAngelis' novel of the same name and draws on introspection of the taboo, compulsion, desire and repulsion that cannibals face.

Don't Worry Darling

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, "Don't Worry Darling" is a psycho-drama directed by Olivia Wilde. Florence Pugh plays the role of a 1950s housewife, living in a utopian society in the California desert.

The peerless façade she has of her life and her husband, played by Harry Styles, slowly starts to crumble as she discovers disturbing secrets and shocking truths.

The Whale

Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" is set to bring in the realities and challenges of morbid obesity.

Based on the play by Samuel D, Hunter, the story revolves around an English teacher (played by Brendan Fraser) who tries to balance his life as an obese and a father who desperately wants to revitalize himself as a parent to his daughter (played by Sadie Sink).

The Banshees of Inisherin

Academy Award winning director Martin McDonagh reunites with actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in this dark comedy.

Set in 1923 on the fictitious Irish Island, Insherin, Colm (Gleeson) decides to end his lifelong friendship with Pádraic (Farrell) abruptly. The movie is a canvas on which McDonagh projects the repercussions of a broken friendship.

The Son

"The Son" is about the busy monotonous lead by Peter (played by Hugh Jackman) and Beth (played by Vanessa Kirby).

Their world is overturned when Peter's son and ex-wife Kate (played by Laura Dern) barges into their lives without any warning.

The film is based on French director and writer Florian Zeller's own play.
