BNP scheduled to discuss action for Khaleda Zia’s treatment

Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to preside over the meeting

The BNP is scheduled to hold a meeting to discuss its plan of action for party chief Khaleda Zia’s treatment abroad.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will preside over the meeting at the party’s Naya Paltan office in Dhaka at 1pm on Wednesday.

Shairul Kabir Khan, member of the BNP chairperson’s media wing, said the joint secretaries general, organizing secretaries and co-organizing secretaries would join the meeting.

The BNP will announce further programs from the meeting for Khaleda Zia’s release and her advanced treatment overseas, according to party sources.

Khaleda Zia, 76, was readmitted to Evercare Hospital on November 13, six days after she had returned home from the same hospital. Her doctors say she has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and ophthalmological and dental complications.

The former prime minister needs immediate advanced treatment abroad as she is also suffering from critical cardiac and kidney problems, while her blood sugar is out of control and the haemoglobin level in her blood has dropped, according to the physicians and party leaders.

On behalf of the family, Khaleda's younger brother Shamim Iskander submitted an application to the Home Ministry on November 11 urging the government to allow her to go abroad for better treatment.

Meanwhile, Law Minister Anisul Huq maintains that the government will consider Khaleda Zia’s appeal only if she makes a fresh petition after returning to jail.Dhaka tribune
