Two-year-old killed in fire sparked by mosquito repellent coil

A lit mosquito repellent coil is believed to have caused a fire that left a 2-year-old child killed in Munshiganj late on Monday.

The fire was reported around 9pm from the third-floor of a building at a village in Sreenagar upazila, said the fire service.

Two-year-old boy Ayas Mridha died in the fire while his mother, Akhter Mim, 25, and sister 4-year-old Ayesha Akhter sustained critical burn injuries, said Station Officer Md Mahfuz Riben of the Sreepur Fire Service.

The mother and daughter are being treated at Dhaka’s Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, he said.

Locals reported to the fire service after noticing smoke coming out from the flat and knocked down the door to rescue the three, said police.

They were rushed to the state-run hospital Sreenagar upazila town, where on-duty doctors declared Ayas dead before referring his mother and sister to the burns hospital in Dhaka.

“A lit mosquito repellent coil is believed to have caused the fire. An investigation is underway,” said Sreepur police OC Md Kamruzzaman.Dhaka tribune
