A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced eight top officials of JKG Health Care, including its Chairman Dr Sabrina Chowdhury, to 11 years’ imprisonment in a case filed over coronavirus test fraud.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain handed down the punishment to the eight after holding them guilty of the crime.
The other accused in the case are JKG Health Care Chief Executive Officer Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Abu Saeed Chowdhury, Himu, Tanzila, Bipul, Shafiqul Islam Romeo and Jebunnesa.
All of them were present at the court during the announcement of the verdict.
JKG Healthcare reportedly provided 27,000 coronavirus reports without following proper test procedures, and most of them turned out to be fake.
On August 20, 2020, a Dhaka court framed charges against Sabrina and seven others in the case.
On June 24, 2020, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) cancelled all approvals given to JKG Healthcare for collection and testing of Covid-19 samples.
The cancellation order was issued a day after police arrested three JKG Healthcare officials, including Dr Sabrina’s husband Ariful Chowdhury, and two others for their suspected involvement in giving fake Covid-19 test reports to people who had given samples at the health facility.
