Mahmud Hasan Ripon takes oath as MP

Bangladesh Awami League's nominated candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon, who won by a huge margin in the Gaibandha-5 seat by-election, has taken oath as a Member of Parliament. The former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League, who led the movement for the release of Sheikh Hasina during 1/11, is representing the National Parliament for the first time.

In the election held on January 4, 2023, Mahmud Hasan Ripon defeated the Jatiya Party candidate by a margin of 33 thousand 326 votes. The press release of Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat informed, January 10, 2023.
Dr. Mahmud Hassan Ripon was sworn in as a Member of Parliament at 5:30 pm on Tuesday by the Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.

After completing the oath ceremony, he paid tribute to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi number 32.

The by-election of Saghata-Phulchari constituency in Gaibandha has been heatedly discussed for the past few months. After the death of former Member of Parliament and Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia, the date of the by-election was fixed on October 12, but the Election Commission stopped the polling midway on the polling day. Although there was no violence in the election, the election commission canceled the vote after seeing the CCTV footage in Dhaka. This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh Election Commission that the polling of all the centers of a parliamentary seat has been stopped due to 'allegations of irregularities' in some centers in the country.

After that, the election commission fixed the new polling date on January 4, 2023. Like last time, this time 3 lakh 39 thousand voters were cast in electronic voting machines in 952 booths and all polling stations were continuously monitored by CCTV cameras from Dhaka.

On the afternoon of the polling day, the Chief Election Commissioner told reporters, "This time there was a good vote." Awami League candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon, the former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League, won a big victory in this free, fair and impartial election held under strict supervision.
